4 sun-things to think about

1.  Who needs sunscreen?

Everyone!  Sunscreen use can help prevent skin cancer by protecting you from the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays.  Anyone can get skin cancer, regardless of age, gender or race.  In fact, it is estimated that 1-in-5 will develop skin cancer in their lifetime.

2.  When shoud I use sunscreen?

Every day if you will be outside.  The sun emits harmful UV rays year-round.  Even on cloudy days, up to 80% of the sun's harmful UV rays can penetrate your skin.  In addition, wear a hat, long sleeves and seek shade between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.  Remember to take extra caution whenever you are near water, snow or sand, as they reflect rays and increase the chances of you getting burned.

3 What is the difference between the rays?

Sunlight consists of different types of harmful rays reaching the Earth; UVA, UVB and IR rays.  Over-exposure to UVA and UVB rays can lead to skin cancer.  UVA rays can age your skin prematurely, causing wrinkles and age spots.  UVB rays are the primary cause of sunburn.  Half of the solar energy reaching the earth's surface falls within the IR range.  Recent studies showed that IR radiation also causes premature skin ageing (called light damage).

4 Is a high SPF factor better than a low one?

Dermatologists recommend using sunscreens with an SPF of at least 30, which blocks 97% of UVB rays.  A higher SPF blocks more UVB rays, but no sunscreen can block 100% of UVB rays.  A good sunscreen also contains an IR filter.
